What Happens to a Vehicle After it's Discontinued?

In the end, we all know that they wind up here on our lot at Charles Barker Preowned. But what about right after a vehicle is discontinued? It might surprise you to know that long after production is ended, many dealerships continue to sell new models. It makes perfect sense too. Why would they stop selling a perfectly good new car just because it's no longer being made? If anything that might spark an extra surge of public interest, right?

Well, as it turns out, such is exactly the case for many vehicles. And this renewed interest in a discontinued model carries right over into the used market, which is why these buying trends interest us so much. That said, we'd like to share a few models with you that have interested us, so that you can see why this is such an interesting topic.

First up is the Cadillac XLR. This is a minor case of post-discontinuation sales to start things off easy. The XLR saw its production end in 2009, and since then it has sold about 200 models; 188 in 2010 and 12 in 2011. Consumers really kept going in for the last of them even in the years following its end. If you ask us, Caddy couldn't ask for a more dedicated fan base.

Ready to see it on a larger scale? Then let's turn out attention to the GMC Envoy and Chevy Trailerblazer. Combined these two models sold more than 340 units in the two years following its discontinuation.

If you think this trend is limited to American automakers, you have another thing coming. Exotic and luxury brands are some of the biggest culprits! Take for instance, Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker discontinued their CLK-Class in 2009, but it wen ton to sell over 500 models in the years that followed. The vehicle was replaced by the E-Class Coupe/Cabriolet, but many a driver out there still seeks the iconic CLK for their driving needs.

After all is said and done, however, we all know that these vehicles become near impossible to find. That's if you're looking for them new, of course. You can likely find the discontinued gem you're interested in within our used car lineup, here at 3252 Virginia Beach Blvd Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
